Vodem in Ubuntu

I was looking at my web stats, and noticed someone was doing searches on Vodems and T-Sticks in Ubuntu, and were getting to this blog. As I had not got the Vodem going in Ubuntu, I though I would give it a try.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10, and I am finding that a lot more things ‘just work’ in it. So, I right clicked on the Network icon up there in the top right, and selected ‘Edit Connections’, then selected the Mobile Broadband tab. Clicked on the add button.  If you have inserted you Vodem, it should appear in the drop down list on the first screen, if not it won’t! On the second screen, select the country (New Zealand here abouts) and it should come up with a list of two providers. Select Vodafone (in this case), and on the next screen select Vodafone Unrestricted. The rest of the settings can stay as they are, unless you want to change the Authentication to just CHAP. I must say I had to fiddle a bit to get it working, but if you have the Vodem in when you set it up, it should be OK. Click on the network Icon, and the Vodafone connection should appear in the list. If you ticked ‘Connect Automatically’ it will either be trying to do so, or will have done it. Otherwise you can click on it to start it, and click on disconnect to stop it. Inserting the card seems to make it available to the Network manager OK, and will start automatically if that is what you selected.

Tried the T-Stick, but Ubuntu didn’t recognise the hardware, probably not on the list. Put the XT sim in the Vodem, and tried that, and while I could set it all up, I couldn’t get it to connect. A job for another day. So a point to Vodafone and Huawei, and a point against Telecom and ZTE!
