I got to check it out on an android phone and an Apple -Pad at the weekend – I really like the look and feel across a number of platforms. Played with some colours, and settle for Wheat as a background colour. May change again though, as it takes just a few seconds to change it in the Custom Style Sheet section.

This morning I decided I needed a little more flexibility, as I was not happy with the format of the printed pages. Putting @media print in the custom style sheet did not work, as the custom style sheet is specifically @media screen! So I have to modify the underlying style sheet of the whole theme. However, this is seriously not recommended, as any upgrades to the Responsive theme would wipe out my changes.

All is not lost, WordPress and Responsive allow for what is called a “Child Theme” which has its own style sheet which is an include of the theme’s main style sheet, plus any styles I want to include. <del>It’s not as easy as the custom style sheet in the dashboard, as the style sheet requires to be edited in an outside editor. I FTP it down to my local machine, edit it in Eclipse, and then FTP it back.</del> I just found out there is an Editor function in the theme options, so it is just as easy as Custom Style Sheets!

So, my first changes are to the @media print section of the style sheet, I removed the option to include a page break before each H1 tag, and also put a display:none; option on the main menu and the breadcrumbs trail. These are my personal preferences, but I do feel if people are printing off my web pages, they want the information with minimal page breaks, and without the online navigation aids.

So the new media print section looks like this

/* Media Print
--------------------------------------------------------------
*/
@media print {
/*   h1 {
        page-break-before: always;
    }
*/
    h1,  h2,  h3,  h4,  h5,  h6 {
        page-break-after: avoid;
    }
    ul,  ol,  dl {
        page-break-before: avoid;
    }
    #menu-menu, .breadcrumb-list {
    display:none;
    }
}

I am really beginning to like this WordPress website, and the responsive theme.
