The paint job did not turn out as well as expected, but the plan is to polish it and add some decals soon.<\/p>\n
The machine turns over very nicely, but the only needle I have which is close to being correct is a DBx1 needle which it turns out is probably not going to work. It sews nicely if handled carefully, but if the hand wheel is used, eventually it breaks a needle. The shank of the needle is round, but is 1.6 mm in diameter. It is also 5mm shorter than a more appropriate needle, so not enough of it is gripped in the needle clamp and groove, so it moves out of line when in use (by a tiny amount), but the needle strikes the shuttle, breaking the needle.
\nAfter some research it appears that while this machine is a clone of a Singer 12, it also has Singer 48K heritage, and the German manufacturers have made some design changes over the years of production, especially around the shuttle design and the needle bar area. So the correct needle is not the 12×1 needle used by the Singer 12, nor us it the 15×1 needle used by the Singer 48K, instead it is the 46×1 or POx1 which seems to be exclusive to German made Transverse Shuttle machines of this era. The good news is these needles are available in size 12 and 14, the bad news is the cheapest way of buying them here in NZ is 50 at a time from AliExpress (who only have them in size 14 at the moment). My order has been sent for $67 worth of needles and courier fees, hopefully to arrive within a week or two.
\nIf anybody else in NZ needs a pack of 10 I will put some of the extras on TradeMe when they arrive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The picture above show the cleaned and painted Haid Und Neu Gloriosa machine.
