Getting this 306k running well is going to be a slow and interesting process. The first job is finding out how it is supposed to work. I have the user manual and the service manual, which helps. However, when things aren’t working well, it is hard to figure out how it should work. The second job therefore is to figure out what the issues are. Obvious issues with tension (mostly lower) were the obvious start, and changing to the correct needle will always help. Using a good thread to test with takes another unknown away.<\/p>\n

Whittling away at issues has gradually got me to the point where I can see how it can perform, and how it works. You can see the results in the photo above. There were still some obvious issues in the machine, stitch length was a bit difficult to control. I examined the stitch length mechanism, and partially stripped it down, and found the operating lever was bent (downwards) so could not achieve the maximum stitch length, and the stitch length indicator was a bit meaningless. I straightened the lever. And reinstalled it and adjusted it properly, and then had to adjust the feed dog height, which had slipped. The lever now accurately shows the correct stitch length from 25 per inch to 6 per inch.<\/p>\n

I need to do more work on the tension, it looks like the bobbin case has been abused, the tension spring does not seem to lie correctly on the bobbin case, and is either too loose or too tight. The machine was used to make sails in it’s previous life, and the owner was using\u00a0 size 18 15×1 needles with a really heavy thread, and I think a bit of bodging was done to get it working.<\/p>\n
