/>

This machine has been on and off TradeMe a few times during my interest in sewing machines, and I always thought it was over priced. We looked at it on Thursday last, and realized that it was being sold by one of our local charity thrift shops (Mary Potter Hospice). I have been wanting a hand crank machine for a while, and this looked an interesting machine. When we researched it “Seidel and Naumann” came up as a likely manufacture, and it is fairly obviously a Singer Model 12 clone. It was being sold as for display purposes only. It looked like a candidate for a full restore, but might have been missing the needle clamp and presser foot.
With curiosity piqued, we set off to take a look. When it was brought out to us, first thing was to check the accessory cubby, where we found a few plastic bags with presser feet, needle clamps, various screws and stuff related to the presser feet. It looked complete, but was very worse for wear! At $100 it was still a bit pricey, but as it was a charity, we decided to buy it.
So what is this machine? Well the ruler in the base is a dead give away that it is German. The workings are Singer model 12 as mentioned before, but other than the badge on the base of the arm, there were no markings of any sort to help us identify it! As we researched it further we started to understand a little about the German Sewing Machine industry. Most machines from about 1870 onwards were manufactured under licence from companies such as Singer, Wilson and Wheeler and some others. At the peak, about 300 German companies appear to have been cloning Singer Model 12,27, 28 and others, and while some such as Naumann sold under their own name, a lot of others sold unmarked machines to large retailers, who badged and decorated the machines to suit their customers requirements. Of course most of the companies were very short lived, and as time went on only a few survived, the Great War saw the demise of many, and mergers and takeovers reduced the numbers still further.
We had no real idea who made this machine or when it was made. Naumann sold similar machines from 1871 until the 1920s or so, and other well known names such as Vesta made their own versions too. Our best guess is that it was made by Haid und Neu, possibly a Liberia or Gloriosa and probably made in 1906.
Identifying this much has been a mission. As I said above many manufacturers made the Transverse Shuttle clones, usually adding a few technical changes. The designs also evolved, for example the tranverse shuttle carrier went through at least 3 iterations between 1870 and 1920. We looked at dozens of examples, and noticed differences in the shape of the arm at the needle head, location of the presser foot, type and location of the bobbin winder, decals used etc, and eventually decided it is a Haid und Neu ‘Gloriosa’. We then started reading the history of Haid und Neu, and found that they made about 20,000 machines a year at the start of the 20th century, and that they passed the 1,000,000 machines mark in about 1907. Looking at pictures of other peoples Gloriosas or Liberias, the serial numbers and years match these numbers and years. Our serial number is 934620, so is probably 1906.

It was probably supplied to a large retailer. This retailer may have put on the badge in the photos above, which shows the God Hermes carrying a caduceus (a staff entwined with two snakes). This badge represents ‘Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body’ so is a little unusual on a sewing machine.

The decals are poor quality, just random flowers, butterflies, dragonflies in no real pattern most of which have come off. However, the decals do appear to have been used by Haid und Neu, maybe at the budget end of the product range. At this time they had other better machines in their catalogue, so Gloriosas and Liberias were already at the budget end!

This item appears to have been dropped at some time, the case has a little damage and the belt guard has been cut in half and the back half discarded to make good some of the damage, leaving the front half with the bobbin winder to wobble about at the front of the machine.

This machine takes a 12×1 needle, which has not been manufactured since the 1930s, making the very rare and expensive when you do find them. On Etsy there was an antique pack of 5 or so for $200! The 12×1 has a 1mm round shank and is fitted to the left side of the square needle bar. The standard needle clamp will not usually take a bigger shank needle. There are alternatives out there, and there are modifications that can be made to the needle bar to take other needles. When I unpacked the accessories in the cubby I found two needle clamps, one slightly bigger than the other, and I wondered if this machine was able to take other needles. No needles came with the machine, so no clues there. One of the favourite alternatives is the DBx1 needle, which is a needle used in commercial machines, and is readily available at local haberdashery outlets. I have a pack in my spares intended for use on my Singer 306 when I get that working. I put the second needle clamp on and a DBx1 needle, and the fit was almost perfect, straight through the middle of the presser foot and the feed dog plate. It may need a bit of timing adjustment for needle length, but the DBx1 is just 2mm or so longer to the eye, but a similar amount shorter from the eye to the point, so I am hoping that the simple but robust mechanism in this machine will cope with these needles.
I have spent today (Saturday) stripping and cleaning the needle head, the feed dogs and the shuttle mechanism, and reassembling and adjusting it. In the next couple of days I will check the timing and needle position and give it a test sew.
More to come. When I have it working, I will concentrate on the appearance of the machine and the case.

Manufacturer Haid und Neu, model Gloriosa or Liberia, built about 1906, handcrank, nature decals, serial number 934620 This machine has been on and off TradeMe a few times during my interest in sewing machines, and I always thought it was …

Hermes – our new sewing machine Read More »

[22

post-4693","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sewing-machines
["GET
