Mitsubishi Minicab Miev with the16 kW-h battery, in post office red, bought from GVI in October 2018. Based in Whitby Porirua, used as a daily commute and for the occasional road trip to Otaki or the Wairarapa. Loving it, 2000km on the clock and counting. Also own/ride an electric cargo bike (Yuba Mundo), and my wife Lynn has an e-bike too.
Dave Glover commented on Ollie Langridge's post.
Wallpaper steamer
Group: Wellington EV Owners
Wallpaper steamer is even faster, I use it to remove normal vinyl signage, but not all oem signage is vinyl. And if it has been there for a while, expect some permanent marking, especially if it is white. Glue residue can be removed with turps, and then a quick wipe with IPA ( not the beer).
Dave Glover replied to James Cozens's comment.
Group: Wellington EV Owners
Yeah, that is the LX, which is the one I got. I am wondering if it is just the miev van, or just some random fault that some mievs have.

A lot of those checks are WOF items. Interesting that changing the transmission oil is every two years, does it work harder than normal for some reason I wonder. I would have thought it was just a reduction gear and a differential.

Good luck pulling them apart, they are really not designed to be easy to get into! I have taken a couple apart out of curiosity, and watched videos of people trying to make their own ebike batteries. It is REALLY hard work.

Evan Ward the awning is relatively close fit, but is 10cms or so longer than the back door. The height to the ground is fine, and the width is OK at the top a d bottom of the door. The awning is a bit heavy for the rams on the van, as it would be for most vans. So we used two adjustable poles in the two back corners of the awning, taking the weight off the door and holding the slightly long awning where it is not supported by the door. Sounds a bit complicated, so I am quite happy for you to come over and see it. We are going away in it this weekend, so unless you fancy following us to Holdsworth campsite, it may have to be next weekend sometime. I will be airing all the gear on Easter Monday, so that might be an opportunity too.

You need an OBD2 device, which plugs in under your dashboard. You also need the canion software on you phone (might be android only). Look at the canion website to see the obd2 dongle that might work the best.
Dave Glover commented on Sophie Heighway's post.
Group: NZ i-MiEV owners
Lower down this group is a thread about this subject with a suggestion about an obd2 device that will work. I have one, and it doesn't really work on my miev van. If you are in the wellington area you are welcome to try it.
Dave Glover replied to Thomas Curtis's comment.

There was another red one for sale at GVI, maybe Daniel Krivan knows if it is still in the wellington area, that would make 4!
Dave Glover replied to his own comment.

I would not recommend the LX, as it did not work for me. The MX should work better, but I have my doubts, I think the MIEV van, and possibly the iMiev don't like OBD2 dongles. They work, but are a bit flakey.
Dave Glover replied to his own comment.
Group: NZ i-MiEV owners
Never tried it, does Canion recommend it?
Dave Glover replied to his own comment.
Group: NZ i-MiEV owners
Sorry for the delay, this is a bit complex to do on the phone. CanIon is the app you can use to look at the stats from your i-Miev. Citroen Zero or Peugeot Ion. It interrogates the CAN bus, and translates it into a graphical interface on your phone. CAN +Ion (the writers are French - hence the Peugeot name). There are other apps, like EVBattery Monitor, which you have to pay for. Search for CanIon on Google Play, and you will see the app. ELM327 dongles will definitely not work with CanIon, and according to some blogs, won't work with the i_Miev at all as they don't support the correct protocols. The CanIon people recommend a bunch of OBDLink products, the LX which is a basic bluetooth model, the MX which is more expensive bluetooth model, the SX which has to plug into a USB port, and is for the real geeks of the world. In all my attempting to get CanIon to work on on my Miev van, I have never found anyone who has got any dongle to work for more than a few minutes at a time on an i-Miev or a Miev van. They seem to connect to the Can bus, and read happily for a while, then lose and remake the connection repeatedly. Depending on what you want to know and record, this may be OK, but some of the better features of CanIon are the trip logging, battery usage logging all of which require a continuous connection, so I have been very disappointed in my attempts to get it working. Even people who are happy with CanIon in their i_Mievs seem to have problems with connections. Much lower down this page are discussions on the use of EV Battery Monitor, but as you can't even download a trial of this software, I have never bothered to try it, $30 for something that does not work is not my style! Hope that all helps, and maybe others can add there two cents worth on how well it did or didn't work for them.

Dave Glover replied to Christopher Nichols's comment.
Group: NZ i-MiEV owners
Christopher Nichols I know this was a long time ago. What year is your iMiev? I mat have tracked the issue down to a change in the can bus codes from about 2015, which canion may not cope with, but then the issue seems to affect older cars too!

Thinking ahead to my first tyre replacement on my miev van (hopefully not for a for a while)- what size are those wheels you are using, and what tyres do you have on them? They look very nice, but bigger than the originals. Are they low profile?

I have a 2017 van. I see a 2019 model with a 10.5 kWh battery in the list, so both batteries seem to be an option. I looked at buying this way, but it was difficult to match the price and convenience of buying from a reputable dealer in NZ. But I was lucky to get the vehicle I wanted at the time I wanted it. Given the real shortage of i-mievs and minicab mievs here, it may be the way to go.
Dave Glover replied to Karin Won's comment.

Did have an issue with it though. Got to 77% charge, and it faulted with a 4022 code. It let me unplug OK, but the charger then was showing a different code on the small led screen. I checked on the charge net app, and I was still showing as connected and active. I managed to stop the connection using the app, which seems to have reset the machine to normal.

The veefil chargers are 50 kW, and are 25c a kWh, and 25c a minute. Cars other than mievs can charge at a faster rate. The 25kW chargers charge 25c a kW, but only 15c a minute, as most cars charge more slowly on them. As my miev can't use more than 22kW, it takes the same amount of time, but it costs less on the lesser chargers.
Dave Glover commented on John Wekking's post.

Thomas Curtis I don't know if they are linked on the van. They are on some versions of the car, but I can't find any where it says the van is. Last point. My van is almost always unladen, this means the van is always pitched forward compared to a laden van. Pitching forward reduces the positive caster angle, which reduces the self centering effect. Next time I buy a load of pellets for the fire, I will try to load it up to maximum, which should pitch the van down at the back increase the positive caster, and hence the self centering on the steering. Accelerating hard will also pitch the van back, which may mean it will self center more too.

Yes, 46 years ago, when I worked for a British Leyland dealer as a sales rep/delivery person, with the whole of North Wales as my area, I came across an old bloke in a workshop somewhere in the middle of Wild Wales who was busy restoring an old Commer lorry. I seem to remember it was 3 cylinders with 6 pistons. He explained it all to me, but at 19 I was probably a bit young to appreciate it!

I may have met this couple at the Waikanae charger on Saturday, or someone in an identical blue, 2019 model 3! Fortunately I only had to wait 5 mins or so. They had difficulty unplugging it, and seemed surprised that I hadn't used the other connection, so I assumed they were just new users. Nice people, so I am sure they will learn from their little faux pas!

As an ex-NZ Post delivery agent with over 10,000 kms riding experience of Paxters, this was quite entertaining. However, it is worth noting that the NZ Post paxters are not quite as sophisticated as the one Bjorn test drove! NZ Post paxters do not have central remote locking, and don't have the flash dashboard and phone app. They are limited to 45kph, even downhill (regen kicks in to slow you down if you try to go faster). They don't have the brake foot pedal, just a separate front and rear hand brake lever. They also don't have the automatic parking brake, but have a thumb lock on the rear brake, and a clunky handbrake down behind the riders legs! The charger is wall mounted, not on the vehicle. However, the NZ Post paxters do have the active cooling fan for the motor, and it is well used in the summer, epecially on the hilly rounds in Porirua and Tawa.

At the other end of the scale, I have issues with my Mitsubishi Miev at many chargers. Veefils mostly don't recognise it the first time I plug it in, but do the second time. The Delta chargers wouldn't charge it until the relevant software update was done on the charger, until then it came up as a Tesla on the LED screen, and at Little River the Orion charger tried its very best to blow my battery up charging at much too high a rate, causing a fault in the car. I wonder if they have a set of parameters in the software for each type of car, and those of us with unusual cars (not Leafs or Teslas until recently) are getting a default setting which in some cases is very unsuitable, causing error codes, overcharging and just plain not working.
Dave Glover replied to his own comment.

The Mitsi has a 360v battery, and takes a maximum charge of 22kW on DC, and I have often wondered just how smart the chargers are, especially some of the more basic older ones. You bike is probably a different voltage again.

Borrow one and see if it works. Canion does not work on post 2015 iMievs and Miev minicabs, and I have been told that earlier models may also have had their CAN bus upgraded to not work on it either. This is what causes the instability of connection, not the OBDII dongle, which work fine with other software (OBDZero for instance). The issue is that the PIDS (Parameter IDs) for the battery cells were changed, so you cannot see the cell voltages and temperatures, but Canion also throws a wobbly when it cannot find the PIDS it is looking for.

Just to clarify, my objections to this site are the poor physical access i.e. narrow spaces, tree, cable too short, bollards and kerbs in the way. Being a local, finding it is not an issue. 😀

Michael Rage i don't think its an equal split, but it does seem to serve that purpose as well. The isolation relays do the normal isolation at the 'end' of the battery, so why not reduce the possible voltages. The imiev battery does the same.

Took a trip to the new Porirua Charger, a huge improvement if you drive a leaf. It was iced in the left hand park when I got there, so I could not get the Miev close enough with that space blocked. As with a lot of Veefil chargers, the cables are too short for the MIEV , the plinthis too high to get any closer, the bollards protecting the electric bits are doing what they are supposed to. Large drops behind the kerbs in this case mean I cannot get up onto the kerb without risking beaching the car! So I go in at an angle, put one wheel on the kerb just a centimetre or two from the plinth, and the extra few centimetres mean I can plug it in without straining the cable or the cars socket. Success!

Gary Catlin the miev is limited to about 3.3kW, so your 16amp evse will only draw about 13amp on an iMiev. No special wall box required, just a 16amp Blue Commando Caravan Socket, which obviously needs to be installed by a sparky. I use my 16amp evse at campsites, and it means i can add a lot of kms quite quickly.

Its low geared so its not sluggish up the hills like the car, but its not very fast (100kph absolute max). Frank Fontaine for what it's worth, they have a 4 star safety rating here, but it is not based on crash testing, but on real life traffic accidents involving these vehicles. As there are not that many of these cars outside Japan, the very small sample size probably inflates the safety record a little. 😊 Not sure if they were ever crash tested.

Karin Won the latest version of OBDZero now shows SOH for iMievs, no need to guess any more.😊 With regards charging to 100% at Otaki, its probably cheaper and quicker to charge to 80% then add the 20% somewhere like Mana, it will only take a few minutes, rather than the 20mins it will take going from 80 to 100, and the Itaki charger costs 25c per minute, and mana just 15c a minute. However you do it, its always fun and a little bit of an adventure. I am going to Bluff in my 84% SOH minicab miev in February, which is just 20 or so little adventures each way!

Tom GT I would love to see those numbers, My guesses above may be way out, my van is hardly representative of anything. I did the same drive in my leaf, and it was about the same percentage extra. The original Genesis trial plan was a bit rubbish, and would have cost me more. I applied for the new one, and was surprised to find it would actually save me money over my current plan (also with Genesis). Basically the rate per kWh during the day stayed the same, and the 9pm to 7am rate is 50%. The daily charge goes up by 6 cents a day to $2.06, but as it is a fixed term plan, I get an extra 3% discount, taking my discounts back to 10%. So if I don't change the way I use electricity, I can see a few dollars saving, if I charge only after 9pm, and use the dishwasher then, I can see I will save a few more dollars. I have 2 EVs, both do 7km per kWh, so with a total mileage of 25,000 kms that's about 4000kWh a year charging, at a saving of 10c per kWh, I will save about $400 per year, less the $18 for the extra daily charges.

You have it backwards, Chargenet is not penalising anyone, Genesis is subsiding Genesis customers charging costs to match their home charging rates. Competition in EV charging is fairly new, Genesis sees other energy companies (Z, bp , Meridian) ramping up their efforts, Chargenet sees other players like Jolt, Open Loop, Thundergrid also coming on board. We should expect to see more and better schemes like this in the future.
